The most important approach to understanding healing a woman with sexual wounds of any kind is that treatment is possible if and when she is ready to be present with the right healthcare team.
One of my favorite aspects of the conversation during a sexual health assessment and evaluation is explaining the layers that are involved with the presenting concerns. I find this so satisfying because I almost always see that “ah-ha” moment on the face of all women when they realize that a) their feelings are validated b) their symptoms are likely not isolated to one behavioral or physical presentation c) it is reasonable to approach healing by considering the whole woman and offering therapy that prioritizes symptom severity and desired outcome.
Discussing sexual and intimacy concerns is like exploring chapters of a book that lead to a variety of endings depending on which plot is chosen.
Religious, cultural, and societal impacts may also determine how they have connected to their past sexual experiences in the past. At the same time, gender assumptions may reveal what they expect in the future. None of these factors have to be true individually or necessary to achieve a desired outcome.
If you or any woman you know is struggling with any level of sexual dysfunction, it is important for them to understand and honor how their mental, emotional, interpersonal, and physical health may all impact how they choose to heal.
Take some time to view the diagram below and see how an approach to address sexual health concerns interconnects with the entire woman. The most successful treatment takes her full presentation and way of living into account.
Understand that women seeking care for their intimate dysfunction are not a monolith behind the diagnosis. They deserve individualized and intimate attention that evaluates their whole health.
